LANDAU PEACE LECTURES

From Coexistence to a Shared Society

The discourse regarding inter-community peacebuilding processes is undergoing major changes in recent years, gradually shifting from "co-existence" as the desired outcome to "shared society". This lecture will present the paradigm shift embedded in these changes, describing the shift from individualistic to relational understanding of the self as foundational to this transition, and the wish to develop more dialogic frameworks of groups' shared living as a central goal in need of clarification. It will also demonstrate this shift through examples from peacebuilding efforts among Jewish and Arab populations in Israel and focus in particular on the work of Givat Haviva, a prominent nonprofit educational institute in Israel dedicated to creating a shared future and shared society in Israel, emphasizing the relational premises that can be found in its methodology to cultivate a shared society among Jews and Arabs in Israel.

Ran Kuttner serves as an academic advisor to Givat Haviva, an organization that aims at building a shared society and dialogue among Jews and Arabs in Israel. He is also an Associate Professor of Dispute Resolution (expert track) at the University of Haifa, where he teaches at the International Graduate Program in Peace and Conflict Management Studies. Prior to his return to Israel, he was an Associate Professor of Negotiation and Dispute Resolution at the Werner Institute, Creighton University (USA) and preceding his arrival at Creighton, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School for three years. He is a certified mediator and mediation teacher in Israel and consults to organizations and community mediation centers that work towards a more dialogic Israeli society in implementing collaborative conflict engagement approaches.  He teaches courses on dialogue, negotiation, mediation, group facilitation, leadership and conflict resolution, and peacebuilding strategies.

Die Veranstaltung findet am Donnerstag, 29. Juni 2017, um 18:30 Uhr in der KHG Katholische Hochschulgruppe, Moltkestraße 9 in Landau statt.
